Playa Marin is a remote and undeveloped beach, only a short walk to the other side of the island can be achieved.

Playa Angosta

Just off shore in water is a hilly island (a "Morro"), so it is easy to find. Currents can be more difficult here than on the beaches closer to downtown.

Playa Condesa

Playa Condesa is in the heart of Acapulco's "Golden Zone" (Parque Papagayo to the Naval Base). A large stone (called "La Redonda") is only a few meters from the coastline. Condesa has many bars and dance clubs, and there is always a crowd, whether it is day or night. This is the last place for party-goers, especially during the "Spring Break". A segment of Condesa (see "Beto's") is a popular beach for gays. The water can be choppy around the offshore rocks, but there is always something happening on the sand.

Icacos Beach

Small in comparison Bayside with beaches, they seem comfortable and tropical, as set out in the lush mangroves of Puerto Marques. The waters are calm. tourists do not flock to These beaches seem to prefer the larger expanses Playas Diamante and Revolcadero. Good shopping and good food are also at hand.

Playa Revolcadero

Playa Revolcadero ("Tumbler beach) and Playa Diamante are really a long, wide strip of sand on the Pacific Ocean near the Fairmont Hotel (Acapulco Princess and Pierre Marques) and the Mayan Palace. These are three most luxurious resorts of Acapulco. Here, the chic and fashionable come to enjoy the sun. Serious swimmers can enjoy on the big waves, rolling on in contrast to the waters of the Bayside take in, the suction effect at the Revolcadero can be very strong.

Playa Larga

Playa Larga (Long Beach) seems to go on for ever so east of Revolcadero, and continue towards Barra Vieja, miles away. The airport is part of it behind the property. This is a place for ecotourism, or quiet retreat back to nature. There are camping sites, one close hatchery for sea turtles and a few places to spend a night. There are not too many services (Such as umbrellas and chairs), some restaurants, and not a seller. Access by car is recommended (no public transport).

Playa Bonfil

Past Playa Larga, Playa Bonfil, also very quiet and empty. Here the waves are strong enough to be able to navigate properly. It has a sandy soil. Waves come to the right and left. Not much is it in the way of services.

Tres Vidas

Playa Tres Vidas (Three-life beach) is even further down the coast from Acapulco Diamante and almost to Barra Vieja. An exclusive golf resort was built here. Very few people come, others as guests of the boutique hotel in the golf club, couples and surfers.

Barra Vieja

In the Far East Acapulco, about 20 miles away, is a fishing village of Barra Vieja (old [sand] bar). Here you will find several restaurants and beach clubs, some of them absolutely first class. They offer Parking, showers and beach facilities. you can eat, drink, sleep in a hammock, swim in the pool, the sun on the beach – whatever you like. It is perhaps as close to a true tropical paradise as you can in those days. Make sure your beach club Choose carefully, or get a recommendation.

My first photography trip to Yosemite

Can I drive around Yosemite in November – my first visit to California from UK and I’m sure of weather etc..

Hi everyone

I’m visiting California for the first time 15-25 November. After going to LA and San Francisco I’m thinking of driving East to Yosemite. After this I would like to see Mono Lake and that area – how can I get to this area?

On the map it indicates that the pass between the two will be closed – is it safe to drive around this area (120 – 108 – 395) and what are these roads like at this time of year? Are they mountainous and bendy? Also I’d really appreciate an indication of how long this would take to drive in a standard car.

After this will it be okay to drive south on the 395 before coming back west to LA, or is this ever closed? Any other tips anyone wants to give about this trip are most welcome. I’m travelling with an 18 month old, so will not be skiing or involved in hectic hiking – but intend a more superficial tourist trip that she will enjoy.

Many thanks for your time
Hannah

To drive from San Francisco, through Yosemite National park, and on to Los Angeles is a journey of about 900 Km. You would probably need to stop for the night mid way. Fill up with gas (petrol) before entering the park. Night time temperatures in the park are just above freezing this time of the year.

San Francisco, through the park to Lee Vining, California, the first town on the other side of the park, is roughly 380 Km. and about half of it is mountainous roads. Lee Vining would be a good spot to spend the night. It is next to Mono Lake which you would want to see during daylight hours. Lee Vining is a very small town with two motels which are:

Murphey’s Motel
1-800-334-6316

Lakeview Lodge
1-800-900-6614

Highway 120 is closed, due to snow for a couple months in winter. If you call the motel, the desk clerk can probably tell you the specific dates it is closed. As of today it is still OPEN.
From the north end of town you will see a beautiful sun rise over the lake.

From Lee Vining to Los Angeles is roughly 530 Km, and US 395 is mostly a 4 lane divided highway. The largest town in the area is Bishop, about 80 Km away and a good place to get petrol and have breakfast. From Bishop to Los Angeles you will be driving in the high desert, and there shouldn’t be any problems. Just south of Independance, California you will pass the location (nothing is left) of the Manzanar Japanese Internment Camp from WW2.

Eventually US 395 will turn toward San Bernardino, and you will take Ca14 toward Los Angeles. Get petrol again in the town of Mojave. As you enter the town, to your left you will see lots of airliners in storage at the airport, and to your right hundreds of wind generators on the Techachapi hills. Just south of Palmdale you will go over a small hill, and if you look at the hillside you will see lots of curvy lines in the layers of soil. You are passing over the San Andreas fault. In the Acton / Canyon Country areas you may see some of the areas that burned in the recent fires.

You can get up to the minute road conditions in California by calling the toll free Caltran road condition hotline at 1-800-427-7623, and Yosemite Road conditions at 1-209 372-0200. You are planning a very scenic trip and I do hope that the road conditions allow you to complete it. Welcome to the United States, enjoy your time here.

2007 Carmel Dog Calendar

I need a recommendation for a nice hotel/lodge in Carmel, CA that is dog friendly.?

Our favorite place in Carmel has closed down (The Quail Lodge). We have stayed there twice over the last year and a half and just loved it (we’re heart broken that it has closed down). The best part of it was they had some nice (roomy) & updated suites at very reasonable prices and it was a great place if you have a dog. Just to open the door and be on the manicured grounds of the golf course was music to our ears. We’re not into the woodsy areas (concern for ticks). We can deal with the beach but not our first choice (a bit messy). Anyway, if anyone knows of a similar place in Carmel, I would appreciate the recommendation. I looked at the Lodge at Pebble Beach, but pricing is just too high.

These would be my recommendations, it’s to bad Quail Lodge is closed right now.

If you are visiting from out of town you no doubt need a place to stay. The Cypress Inn is partly owned by Doris Day, and might be the most well known dog friendly hotel in Carmel. Others include: Coachman’s Inn, Tradewinds Inns and my personal favorite The Lodge at Pebble Beach.

Pebble Beach can be pricey during the spring, summer and fall, but you can generally find better rates in the winter time because of the lack of golfers willing to risk playing a $500 course in the rain. Evening time after all the golfers and marshals have left the course is a good time to take your dog on a walk along the course and watch the sunset.
